Coach Megan Ruttler's women's soccer team got the start they wanted against host Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) Tuesday afternoon.
But a sub-par second half and damp conditions doomed the Roadrunners, giving the Lady Barons a hard-fought 2-1 victory and handing RCGC its first loss of the season.
No question, the Roadrunners fought hard, but could not overcome their talented NJCAA Division 1 opponents.
Ashley Engler (Williamstown), with an assist from Kirsten Vance (Kingsway), scored the game's first goal to help the Roadrunners to a 1-0 lead before the Lady Barons tied it prior to halftime at 1-1. In the second half, RCBC went ahead 2-1 on a goal off a corner. The Roadrunners had several opportunities to tie the game but could not cash in.
"We just did not play well enough for the full 90 minutes to win the game," Ruttler noted following the contest.
The loss dropped the Runners, ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA D III rankings, to 6-1 overall. Rowan Burlington improved to 5-2 overall.
Moving ahead, the Roadrunners will play their next six games against Region XIX opponents starting with a home match against Bucks County CC Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
