Roadrunner women's basketball standout Trina Deveney-Bethea earned a distinguished place in South Jersey athletics history this week, and the former Cedar Creek High athlete is very appreciative of her honor.
For the second time in her career, Deveney-Bethea has been selected to be honored during the statewide celebration for National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, February 3. Trina was selected as 2021 Roadrunner Woman of the Year, and her award marks the second time she has earned this distinguished honor, also receiving the award in 2019 as a senior at Cedar Creek High.
Outstanding high school and college/university female athletes are annually selected for this honor by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports. This year's celebration will be held virtually on Wednesday February 3rd. Watch here for more details.
Trina received the news earlier this week from RCSJ women's basketball coach Rich Cooper.
"I am very excited and very appreciative to receive this award," said Trina, a sophomore liberal arts major. "I was a little shocked since we have not even started our season due to the pandemic, but of course I'm appreciative to be thought of as a leader here in our school. I'm also thrilled to receive this award both in high school and in college!"
Trina averaged 14.9 points and 12.4 rebounds per game as the team's starting forward in 2019-2020. She performed consistently well, including in the Region XIX Tournament, and was selected as a member of the Region XIX All-Star Team. Trina has recently been announced as the Treasurer for the Roadrunner Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
She hopes to continue playing basketball at a four-year NCAA university and earn a degree affiliated with either neonatal medicine or nursing. Trina also wishes to play professional women's basketball overseas.
"We really appreciate Trina's leadership and commitment to Roadrunner Athletics," said Executive Director of Athletics Brian Rowan. "She had an outstanding season on the court last year and we look forward to seeing her and her teammates back on court here in 2021."
The National Girls and Women in Sports Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes throughout New Jersey who have made significant contributions to their institution and community through athletic accomplishments, academic success, and community involvement.
The Roadrunner Department of Athletics plans to honor Trina at a future date to be announced.
